That Voice!!

Today a friend brought me a set of CDs of Alan Rickman reading Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native.  Thomas Hardy could manage to depress even the cheeriest person, but I'm listening more to the exquisite turns of phrase than the story itself, and these made even more exquisite by virtue of being spoken by Rickman.  Gawd - I think he could read out the London phone book and it would enthrall me!
It's easy to understand why JKR chose him for the role of Snape, even if he was too old for the character as written.  He's definitely someone who makes quite the impact in the little amount of screen time Snape gets in the HP movies.
